Synopsis:
"It's 1989 in Lagos. Political hysteria and
social change are sweeping Nigeria. Chief Adeyemi's wife Toyin is
turning 40 and, behind the mansion walls, the household is preparing
for her party.
But there are other
distractions.
Their troublesome sons,
returning from college, are more interested in seduction and starting
revolutions than their parents' disintegrating marriage.
Meanwhile Helen, the
ambitious house girl, is waiting for her chance.
... An unmissable theatrical
party, Ìyà-Ilé is the long-awaited prequel to the hugely successful The
Estate, which is currently being adapted for film.
A vibrant mix of comedy,
political satire and family intrigue, Ìyà-Ilé is packed with witty
dialogue and the wonderful music of Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Sunny Ade and
Ebenezer Obey.
Oladipo Agboluaje's most
recent plays include The Christ of Coldharbour Lane and the five-star
hit The Hounding of David Oluwale.
Tiata Fahodzi was last at
Soho Theatre in 2007 with the sell-out hit Joe Guy."
"Live and raw Afrobeat featuring London's
finest musicians. Experience the tightest underground Spiritual Live
Afrobeat sessions in authentic Afrika Shrine style led by Dele Sosimi
(Afrobeat Maestro Original ala EGYPT 80) with DJ Koichi Sakai on the
decks.
Afrobeat is a combination of
Yoruba music, jazz, Highlife, and funk rhythms, fused with percussion
and vocal styles, popularized in Africa in the 1970s. Afrobeat's main
creator was the Nigerian multi-instrumentalist and bandleader Fela
Kuti, who coined the term Afrobeat, shaped the musical structure and
also the political context of the genre in Nigeria.
Nigerians were first
introduced to Afrobeat in 1970 when Kuti returned from a U.S tour with
his group Nigeria 70 (formerly Koola Lobitos).
Kuti's new sound hailed from
a club that he established called the Afro-Shrine. Upon arriving in
Nigeria, Kuti changed the name of his group to Fela Ransome-Kuti
& Africa 70. The band maintained a five-year residency in the
Afro-Shrine from 1970-75 while Afrobeat thrived among Nigerian youth.
Read more on wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afrobeat Dele Sosimi is
known for the original keyboard player of Fela Kuti's Egypt 80 for 7
years and then working as music director for Femi Kuti's Positive Force.
Based in London, he is now
working on his own project to spread and educate the spirit and culture
of Afrobeat. His new album "Identity" is out now and available from
